Papers and abstracts presented at the XVIIth World Congress of CIGR are now available on the web. They can be reached through the congress web site (www.cigr2010.ca) or by visiting the permanent archives of the Canadian Society for Bioengineering.
During the past five years, the Biomass & Bioenergy Research Group (BBRG) at the University of British Columbia has conducted extensive research on wood pellet production, storage, handling, life cycle analysis, and characterization of new generation of torrefied pellets. A Collaborative Research and Development program between UBC, Wood Pellet Association of Canada (WPAC) and Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has funded this project. The British Columbia Ministry of Forest, Natural Resources Canada, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, FPInnovations, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (U.S. Department of Energy), and several private sector partners have also contributed to the development of feedstock engineering research at UBC. The BBRG is organizing a 2-day Workshop at the University of British Columbia during May 17-18, 2011 to share the latest research and development on wood pellets. In addition to members of the BBRG, key members of the industry are invited to present the state of technology of wood pellet processing, handling, and market trends.

Cement based materials play a key role in the development of modern agriculture. The sustainability of today’s agriculture is strongly related to construction materials, their quality and durability. Nowadays, the social emphasis is for a more sustainable agriculture. This factor will influence the selection of materials for agricultural buildings and structures. Due to the environmental footprint of cement production and, in some cases, to its premature deterioration, does concrete can still fulfill a fundamental role in agricultural facility construction? This symposium will provide a great venue to share and discuss information relating to concrete construction. The main topics discussed at the symposium will help to answer these questions and much more!
The Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) invites you to the 2011 CSBE/SCGAB Annual Conference that will take place July 10-13, 2011 in Winnipeg, MB. The Conference will be held at the Inn at the Forks located at the historic junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in downtown Winnipeg. “Growing Renewable Energy” has been selected as the theme for the Conference. A full day of the Conference will be devoted to industry tours that fit within this theme. At this point, the LAC would like to encourage you to consider sharing the results of your research at the Conference. Any research relevant to the Society will be included in the technical program; however, we are particularly interested in soliciting papers in the following areas that relate to our theme of “Growing Renewable Energy”:
