This tour include boxed lunch The Holland Marsh, located between Barrie and Toronto, is an 8000 hectare polder created from swampland in the early 1900’s. It’s rich muck soils grow a variety of vegetable crops primarily for the Toronto market. The crops grown reflect the evolving immigration patterns - onions, potatoes and carrots in the early years, Italian greens after the war and more recently Asian greens. In October of 1954, the entire marsh was flooded as Hurricane Hazel dumped 200 mm of rain in a day overwhelming the canals and breached the dykes. Presently, there is a $25 million, 7 year project upgrading the drainage works to reduce the potential of flooding, to improve traffic safety with the open canals and improve the fish habitat and other environmental enhancements. The tour will start at the Muck Crops Research Station whose research is specific to the crops and conditions of the Holland Marsh. We will then visit one of the many greenhouses that operate here. Through out we will hear about the history of the marsh and see the present drainage works as we travel through. Finally, we will visit the Holland Marsh Winery where we will have lunch and a wine tasting. The bus will pick up at the Best Western and the Comfort Inn Hotels at 8:45 am and at the University at 9:00 am. For those heading south after the tour and do not need to return to Orillia, you may follow the bus by car from Orillia to Hwys 400 and Hwy 9 (just south of the Holland Marsh). Park your car in the commuter parking lot (southwest corner of the intersection) where the bus will pick you up to continue the tour. We will finish about the winery at 2:30 pm and return to the commuter parking lot. This will save 2 hours of driving at the end of the day. The bus will then return to Orillia by about 3:30 pm. Note: The driving time to the Holland Marsh is 1 hour. A number may prefer to follow the bus so that they do not have to return to Orillia. This would save them 2 hours of travel time if they are headed to Toronto and points east. So, the bus will first drive to a car park at Hwy 400 and Hwy 89 where those who have chosen to drive will park their cars and board the bus. The bus will return to that park at the end of the tour, about 2 pm and be back in Orillia before 3:30 pm." |

This tour include boxed lunch We start at the Lakehead University where we will have an in-depth tour the 3 buildings that make up this new Orillia campus. All have been built to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard for which they achieved the Platinum rating. Features are the use of geothermal heating and the green roof technology. After the tour of the campus we will travel to Matchedash Bay near Waubaushene. The site is included in the Ramsar world list of protected wetlands. The wide diversity of flora and fauna include 550 plant species, 34 fish species, 28 mammals, 17 reptiles and amphibians. Ducks Unlimited owns and manages a portion of the Bay but it is also a popular cottage and recreation area. The third stop will be to the Big Chute Marine Railway. This is part of the 400 km, 45-lock Trent Severn Waterway built to connect Lake Ontario and Lake Huron 150 years ago. Here, for purposes of expediency, a marine railway was installed rather than a conventional lock. It still moving pleasure boats over the 60’ rise of the Big Chute rapids and is the only one still operating in North America. The final stop will be the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre in Gravenhurst. This museum captures the essence of Muskoka, a cottage and recreation area for over 100 years with its rich history of steamships, boat building and summer resorts. Of particular interest is Grace and Speed, North America’s only in-water exhibit of working antique boats. The tour will start at 9:00 am at the Lakehead University Campus and will return by approximately 3:30 pm. |
