The intent of the Lake Louise retreat is to build on the momentum of last year‟s retreat (held in Jasper, AB) while introducing the refined vision of the BCN:
Supporting Alberta’s research community, industry, and other partners for the development of advanced technologies to convert biomass into “drop-in” chemicals and fuels compatible with both traditional and emerging industries.
It is also an opportunity to showcase the status of current BCN research projects and will provide a forum for partnering and information exchange. Furthermore, we are assembling industry panels to engage in discussions focused on strategies and approaches to forming highly effective and successful research initiatives between academia, tradi-tional industries and newer bio-industrial sector companies. In order to create a strong and unified bioeconomy, the traditional sectors including oil and gas, petrochemicals, agriculture, and forestry, must engage in open dialogue with one another and begin to coordinate efforts.
This retreat is one of the only events in Alberta that brings together academics, government officials, funding agen-cies, and industry representatives from each of the traditional sectors to discuss the status, challenges, and opportuni-ties in Alberta‟s bio-industrial sector. The Honourable Doug Horner, Deputy Premier and Minister of Advanced Edu-cation and Technology, will be in attendance to provide the welcome address. Confirmed speakers include Tim Haig (President and CEO, BIOX), Charles Wyman (Chairman Leadership Team and Scientific Advisory Board, Co-Founder, Mascoma), Stephen Sulz (Director of Production, ALPAC), Rob Broin (CEO, Otoka), Bob Winship (Business Development Manager, Weyerhaueser), Paul Clark (President & Chief Visioneer, VisionGain Consult-ing), Stewart Campbell (SJC Investments), and Gary Smith (Technical Director, Alberta Newsprint).
