Sylvio Tessier , Ph.D., P. Eng. is awarded the 2003 CSAE/SCGR Glenn Downing Award for his excellent contribution to teaching, research and professional service in Machinery Systems. He is currently Livestock Environment Engineer with Manitoba Conservation and principal of ST AgriTech, a consulting company specializing in research, development and manufacturing of research instruments and machinery, as well as commercial no-till seeding equipment.

As a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (1982 - 1989), Sylvio devoted time and efforts to the development and evaluation of minimum and no-till tillage for soil conservation. This work led to a number of scientific publications and extension activities.
While at Université Laval (1989 - 1998), Sylvio taught undergraduate and graduate courses dealing with tillage engineering, and supervised two Ph. D. and thirteen M.Sc. students, and three post-doctoral fellows. He was involved with the establishment of the Agricultural Environment Research Group (GREA) and served as the Group Chair for six years. Over this period, the GREA attracted an average of $3 million per year in research grants and contracts.

Since his move to Manitoba, Sylvio has been active as a livestock environment engineer with Manitoba Agriculture and Food and Manitoba Conservation. While his employment activities were focused on environmental issues arising from livestock production, his other interests lead him to participate and contribute to research and development projects on tillage and seeding systems.

Dr. Tessier has been a member of CSAE/SCGR since 1989 and he has served as an Associate Editor for the Power and Machinery section of the Canadian Agricultural Engineering journal from 1997 to 1999. His contribution to the knowledge and engineering of minimum and no-till tillage systems is well recognized in the agricultural engineering community.
