Dr. Qiang (Chong) Zhang, P.Eng. is awarded the 2004 Canadian Society of Agricultural Engineering (CSAE/SCGR) John Turnbull award for his outstanding contribution to teaching, research and professional service in building systems engineering. Chong is currently Chair of the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba

A fifteen-year member of CSAE/SCGR-ASAE, Chong was regional director of the CSAE/SCGR Manitoba Region. He has chaired three ASAE Structures & Environment committees and served as Associate Editor of Transactions of the ASAE. He currently is the president of the Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological, and Food Engineers. Chong is the recipient of two ASAE Honourable Mention Paper Awards and two Superior Paper Awards.

Professor Zhang is a Professional Engineer registered in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba. He has served as a member in many other professional committees, such as the Agricultural Guidelines Development Committee and the Canada Committee on Crops. Chong has also served many international associations, such as Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. Chong is an Honourary Professor of three universities in China.

Chong has been the head of Biosystems Engineering at University of Manitoba since 2000. He also teaches and remains very active in research. His publications include 45 refereed articles, 2 book chapters, 21 proceedings papers, 87 conference papers and 16 technical reports. In his fifteen years as an educator and researcher, he has passed on knowledge to many students who are now practicing engineers. His research results contribute to the knowledge in the areas of grain storage structures and animal production environment.

As a researcher, Chong is a good team member. As a colleague, Chong is easy to work with. As the Department Head, he addresses the concerns from every staff and resolves their problems in a timely fashion. He makes every one feel comfortable to talk to him about the department. Chong has a daughter and a son. His hobbies include fishing, singing and home renovation. He and his wife both enjoy activities with Chinese communities.
