Ronald D. MacDonald, P.Eng., is awarded the 2005 CSBE/SCGAB John Turnbull Award for his outstanding contributions to Building Systems Engineering through his extension and consulting engineering activities. Ron is a 1981 graduate in Agricultural Engineering of the University of Guelph and a 24-year member of CSBE/SCGAB. He is also recognised for his 12-year service to CSAE/SCGAB as Treasurer and as Regional Director in 1985-86.
Ron is President of the consulting firm Agviro located in Guelph, ON. The firm, founded in 1993, now employs 4 additional people, providing livestock environmental consulting services throughout North America and overseas. Ron has also completed several research projects for firms developing products used for improving the livestock environment. He has been heavily involved with the adoption of radiant tube heaters for swine facilities.
Earlier in his career, Ron was employed at Ontario Hydro, focusing on the reduction of energy use through better controls and efficient lighting. He instituted a number of on-the-farm research projects and carried them through to presentation at CSBE/SCGAB meetings. He, along with Dr. Gordon Hayward of the University of Guelph, did some very creative work with PID controllers and hydrogen sulfide sensors for swine barns. While working with the Ontario Agricultural Energy Centre Ron played a leadership role in the development of heat exchangers and heat pumps for agricultural applications. He produced more than 30 fact sheets and bulletins to aid farm operators in good energy management techniques. Mr. MacDonald has provided strong service to ASAE through his Chairing of sub committees of, and membership on, IET 433 Electrical Utilisation Energy Applications.
Ron MacDonald was awarded the CSBE/SCGAB Young Engineer of the Year Award in 1996.
